Where to stay in Barcelona

Eixample

In the north of the Plaça de Catalunya, the leafy avenues and wide pavements of Eixample contrast sharply with the maze of streets in the center of the city of medieval style. This quarter designed in the nineteenth century stands out for its impressive examples of Catalan modernist architecture. Go on a pilgrimage visiting the masterpieces of Antonio Gaudi, the church of La Sagrada Familia, the undulating apartment building of La Pedrera and Casa Batllò, with motifs reminiscent of the dragon. The elegant Passeig de Gràcia shopping street extends northward through the Eixample to converge with Avinguda Diagonal, a major thoroughfare that crosses the city. The neighboring district of Sant Marti begins at this point and continues eastward, toward the coast.

Eixample is a great are to choose your accommodation if you want to remain central to Barcelona but also avoid the hustle and bustle. With excellent transport links it will only take you a few minutes to reach the center but at evenings you can escape home to a much more relaxed atmosphere. The Gothic quarter and El Born

The Gothic quarter and El Born are two of the most visited neighborhoods of Barcelona. They have a special charm with their small streets surrounded by old buildings. Obviously its location is perfect since they are located in the heart of the city, in the oldest districts of the same, in which the town and metropolis posterior originated. Because of its charm, they are two of the most desirable areas to stay in Barcelona. Clearly this interest affects the cost of accommodation and is considerably higher than elsewhere in the city. Gràcia has more of an alternative feel than the rest of Barcelona and is away from the majority of tourism, but still near the center. Alternative cinemas, many restaurants of different origins and small businesses, give this district a unique charm. If you are lucky enough to visit the neighborhood in August, you will be a witness of the Festa Major de Gràcia where different streets compete to see which has the best and most creative decor.

Gràcia is the area to stay if you want to experience the city as a local, however overtime more tourists have crept into the area it still maintains its unique vibe. Make sure to check the calendar before booking your stay mind as during the many fiestas a good nights sleep is hard to come by.

Barceloneta

A neighborhood located next to the port  and originally inhabited by fishermen and their families. Today it is one of the most important tourist areas as it is next to the beach and is the reason why Barcelona won the best City by the beach. As well as the beach you will find some of the best seafood restaurants in the city as well as some great entertainment facilities.

If you travel to Barcelona to go to the beach, without doubt, this is the best area to stay in Barcelona. However be warned after the 2014 controversy all apartments rentals in Barceloneta had their tourism licences revoked so it is no longer legally possible to rent a holiday apartment in the area. There are still hotel options available the most famous of these the emblematic W hotel which was modeled on the Burj Al Arab in Dubai.
